About

The main purpose of this blog is to connect with other DIYers and professionals who are interested in converting Mill/Drills into CNC machines on a limited budget.   My primary interest is developing or finding software to control the CNC machine.  I am a software guy who can do a little bit of hardware.  I am interested in exchanging ideas, experiences, recommendations on tool, software and part manufacturers.

This site is about using technology for your shop in a safe and cost effective manner.  You are probably aware that a lot of these items are available commercially, but they could end up costing a lot of money.  With advent of “Open Source” software, there might be a project that will lower the software costs and development time.  This site will cover topics in woodworking and metal working, but not limited to those topics.

The first part of the site is about using technology to manufacture wood products using a retrofitted CNC mill.  The advantage of the converting Mill/Drills into CNC machines, is you don’t have to buy a new machine.  Due to the limited space in my garage this is a plus.  I don’t have much room in my garage.  Also buying a new machine would cost at least another $3000 and up.   Another advantage is safety, once the machine is milling a part, your hands are nowhere near the router or the spinning blades.  You will need to have a polycarbonate shield between you and the spindle just in case the bit breaks.

Finally, another point is taking care of your health by eating right and exercising.  Taking care of your health will help you in the future as you get older.  It would be hard to tackle these projects if you are tired or sick constantly.  We will cover some topics in this area.
